One of the problems with growing your own vegetables is stopping the pesky pigeons from eating them before you get the chance. Over the years I've tried all the normal methods for keeping them away, from scarecrows, to hanging up old CD's, to movable netting covers. None of which work very well.
The only real solution is the fruit cage approach, whereby you cover the whole area in netting, preventing the pigeons from getting to your veg before you can. The big problem with this approach is the cost to do it properly, which is why you see all sorts of Heath Robinson affairs on allotment sites across the country, none of which work or last very well.
Back in the winter of 2019- 2020 I finally admitted defeat to all my previous attempts and invested the necessary funds to do the job properly. It would have worked out a lot cheaper if I'd actually ordered what I needed, instead of what I fancied, as I've probably got enough bits left over to do it all again. But, most importantly I've ended up with a solid structure that should easily last 10 years and beyond, and if last year's crops are anything to go by was money well spent.
I don't know how the delivery guy unloaded that lot on his own, I couldn't even lift them!
